Buda is a Hays County city built around I-35

Buda is its own city, with a historic downtown on Main St and Buda Mill & Grain a short walk from the old storefronts. Most of the traffic, though, moves on I-35, where northbound commuters pile up each morning and southbound traffic surges back after work. Shopping centers and restaurants line both frontage roads.

That layout makes a breakdown manageable if you can reach the frontage road. A parking lot is one turn away at almost every exit, far safer than the interstate's inside shoulder.

FM 1626, FM 967 and the road to the Hill Country

FM 1626 runs west toward Manchaca and north toward Austin, while FM 967 heads west past newer subdivisions toward Driftwood and the Hill Country. Both are two-lane stretches with little shoulder in places, and stations are spaced out. Drivers pulling trailers or heading to the river and ranch country add weekend traffic.

If you break down out there, tell dispatch the nearest cross road, a ranch gate or a mile marker. Rural roads here don't always have lit signs.

Where to wait in Buda, and low spots to avoid

Buda City Park, the lots along Main St and the big shopping centers off I-35 are good, well-lit places to wait. Plum Creek and other creek crossings in the area can flood after hard rain, so never drive around a barricade or through standing water. If you're stuck near a low-water crossing, move to higher ground and call.
